about

Better Than Even - the tenth Tetlow and Broadhurst Album - Remastered and expanded edition 2015. Now expanded to a Double album to include a 3rd Phase Duet also derived from the original Cello duet.

Shortly after completing a remaster of our 8th album 'Sonata for Solo Violin and Electronics' we began that for our 9th - our album for Cello duet and Electronics described cryptically as Phase Duets for the process of Phase layering the /cello lines - Composed separately by Jim and myself and brought together, gradually at his studio in Elmsthorpe, Leicestershire. Where. the final recordings were made, with the electronics and the Studio. as instruments in themselves. Here not to simply enhance a performance but to reimagine it and a second 'Duet' emerged. We were playing with the whole notion of Performance, Consequence and reproduction - we were a laboratory of music production.

The 2nd Phase Duet, I discovered to my cost, has a Stroboscopic effect, on people like me, who are epileptically triggered by high intensity repetition in patterns; Visual and Aural. If you are a photosensitive Epileptic you might take care with no. 2 - it is dizzying ! I first discovered this effect with an early electronic work of mine Called 'Acho' [as a species of echo which stacks up a very elongated sound decay] - from my album 'Electronic music 1 - Canticle for large bell'.

During the Remastering of the Phase Duets, at Isabel June 2015, we got to thinking 'Could there be a 3rd Phase Duet - as different from the 2nd as the 2nd is from the first'? we tried dozens of possible ways - and just when I was begging to think there was no such solution, something sparkled in the dirt - and we had a lead. That led me quickly to the solution we call Phase Duet 3. Duet in the sense here, that it has two components of origin and two audible lines, albeit less obviously than in the first two of the set. It belongs to the set because it fits the spirit and the plan of the set

Remastered with the 3rd Phase Duet at my Isabel Studio June 2015.
