[B] Tetlow And Broadhurst
[B11] Celestation Live

My first Contemporary duo was with multi instrumentalist Jim Tetlow. I met him in 2007 when he was playing in Endgame, We hit it off immediately like we were twins. Soon I was staying weekends at his studio at Elmsthorpe, Leicestershire, where we recorded a series of 8 seminal albums. Better Than Even is the last of the Elmsthorpe Albums as Jim moves his studio to Leicester, on to the same street as David Dhonau and Ola Szmidt.
A lot of music shared between us all - some 60 albums - the majority of The DCM Cm Albums. There was quite a break between our 10th and the eleventh album Cellestation, during which I worked on my Beriom Series ‘after Berio’ and I asked Choreographer Dr Joanna Geldard to choreograph no. 10 - we ended up recording as [C] Etuda - 2 albums of quite a flair and drum works - for her - for me, on 3 albums of my own. Three albums further with [D]‘Revenge of the Umbrella People and the first with Maurine Anderson as [E] Anderson Morning. Now friends for life - Jim and I have 19 albums together and 3 Arkiv Discs.

[B11] - Celestation - for 2 Cellos & Electronics - our 11th album and the one that saved us from drifting apart. Jim and I knew of a place, over by the Soar - Moat Hall a rambling old pile on a moated site - with a Tithe Barn that we have both recorded in at one time or another. Jim came up with the Idea of a one off live event and this became the 11th Album - 'Celestation' - from 'Celestial' - of the heavens - in a nod to our mutual heritage of a Cosmic or Kosmiche music - which had brought us together in the first place - via Endgame. This really revived us. We both agree that it's a Cosmic Classic. Performed and recorded by us - 11th August 2009 live at the Moat Hall, Spottington-on-Soar, Leicestershire, UK,

[B10] - The Measure of Autumn - this felt like the last of the early days, we were very close at this point, and yet we almost called it a day after this, the tenth album. It was recorded at my Isabel studio, where the autumn leaves were all about us. The title derives from a phrase I coined from looking at the state and colour of the maple trees in Allestree, on a hill near Isabel; 'I Measure the autumn by the maples.' It's an album about autumn - the American, 'New England' autumn, by way of the delicate 'folksy fiddle work, that Jim played, giving it a grounded earthy quality non of our other work has. The titles we chose, came out of the colours we felt. No electronic trickery here - just a heartfelt union of two musical adventurers, inventing the future as we went.

Designing the Cover at Jim's studio in Leicester - I wanted Leaves, so he brought a couple in from his garden - and whaddya know - Maples. His Fiddle, my power bass, and a double drum session. Tetlow and Broadhurst on a distant autumn day. Like shadows and sunlight on such a day, the music Draws and pauses, muses and Idles, races and bites. Perhaps one of the best things we ever did together.

“Wonderful” - Marina Vesic - Serbian Contemporary Composer - Pianist 17 Jan 2015

[B9] - Better Than Even - the ninth Tetlow and Broadhurst Album - a remastered and expanded edition of 2015. Expanded to a Double album to include a 3rd Phase Duet also derived from the original Cello duet.

Shortly after completing a remaster of our 8th album 'Sonata for Solo Violin and Electronics' we began that for our 9th - our album for Cello duet and Electronics described cryptically as Phase Duets for the process of Phase layering of the cello lines - with the electronics and the Studio. as instruments in themselves. Here not to simply enhance a performance but to reimagine it and a second 'Duet' emerged. We were playing with the whole notion of Performance, Consequence and reproduction - we were a laboratory of music production.

The 2nd Phase Duet, I discovered to my cost, has a Stroboscopic effect, on people like me, who are epileptically triggered by high intensity repetition in patterns; Visual and Aural. If you are a photosensitive Epileptic you might take care with no. 2 - it is dizzying ! I first discovered this effect with an early electronic work of mine Called 'Acho' [as a species of echo which stacks up a very elongated sound decay] - from my album 'Electronic music 1 - Canticle for large bell'.

During the Remastering of the Phase Duets, at Isabel June 2015, we got to thinking 'Could there be a 3rd Phase Duet - as different from the 2nd as the 2nd is from the first'? we tried Many possible ways - and just when I was begging to think there was no such solution, something sparkled in the dirt - and we had a lead. That led us quickly to the solution we call Phase Duet 3. Duet in the sense here, that it has two components of origin in two audible lines, albeit less obviously than in the first two of the set. It belongs to the set because it fits the spirit and the plan of the set. remastered with the 3rd Phase Duet at my Isabel Studio June 2015. Cover graphics by Jim - Cover Art ‘Aspect 2’ by J.B.

'I enjoy being able to listen 'into' the sound' - Chris Orton - British Recorderist - renowned interpreter of Contemporary and Ancient music - June 26th 2015.

[B8] - Sonata for Solo Violin and Electronics a beautiful double album - a highpoint of our Elmsthorpe days. What I love about Jim Tetlow is that he's an enabler - a multitalented man, multi-instrumentalist, a vicious percussionist, photographer, Graphic and Fine Artist, Damned fine friend and Collaborator - with me as Tetlow and Broadhurst across 19 albums and as a design partnership on hundreds of things - for my Albums and our Albums. Lord knows I've asked some Far out things of him - but he has never let me down. One of the most Far out things we did - was this two hour homage to Stockhausen - in five movements - using the Spectra of Violin Harmonics and a great deal of time - ironically titled 'Sonata for Solo violin and Electronics. Not in the sense that you could ever play it - rather in the sense of it being 'about' the Violin, a shadow cast by one - as on the divine cover he created for it. This was definitely 'one of our more difficult pieces' - from our 'difficult period' as he would say. His natural inclination is to make music Gorgeous - mine probably the opposite - this is a landmark in both our careers. Now remastered to bring out the real detail of what we achieved. Please - your patience and your Deepest listening skill. Please rediscover or if you have never heard it - Come with us for Tetlow and Broadhurst's Sonata for Solo Violin and Electronics - as 'The Danse Society' said “The waiting is Hell but Heaven is waiting' . . .”

[B7] - Koncertat, the first of a trilogy of our 'more difficult albums'. and our darkest. The two outer 'meditations' of struck metal Harmonics lead into and out of the central work to focus the experience. We felt those objects were bell-like in an idiophonic sense and gave us a meditative feeling of intonement. The central 'Koncertat' is the dark focus of the album - a 'Concert' of a solo instrument in a vast space of resonance and a Dark primordial accompaniment, in a metallic parody of a Concerto. The soloist fights against a legion of opposition. The struggles to find and keep his voice in the fray and is lost to the opening of the second meditation. The three pieces work as a conceptual suite of metallic moment.

[B6] - Live in a Drum Group - our sixth album and third in a trilogy of Drumming Albums. We happened to stop by a drum group session - we had our drums and kind of shaped it. We were soon asked to lead it. So this is us directing the forces of a drum group. Also featured is our large-scale studio composition for multiplayered drumming 'Organisation for drum group'. Preparing the album's cover we were amused by the visual pun of a group of Drums. The Cover plays a game itself, where white parts of the drums bleed into and from a white border acting or pretending to be an Active Negative. Picture pun by us both.

[B5] Bridges Above Us - live - under those Normandy Way Bridges The Live cut this time - two percussionists and a bridge. Recorded 7th February 2008 at Normandy Way Underpass, near Barwell, Leicestershire. Cover Photo ‘Us - there’ by Jim Tetlow. Mastered by Julian Broadhurst at the Isabel Studio.

[B4] Under Normandy Bridges - We are both accomplished percussionists and close to Jim's studio at Elmsthorpe are a pair of acoustically wonderful subways beneath a bypass called Normandy Way. Here we recorded the live source for this set of experimental rhythmic variations. We wanted to experience the rhythmical complexity and the changes in structural shaping necessitated by each variation. Recorded seventh of February 2008 at Normandy Way Underpass, near Barwell, Leicestershire. Reshaped and mastered by julian Broadhurst, 2008 at Isabel. Cover graphic: 'Leopoldine 2' by julian Broadhurst, 2003.

[B3] Orn. Our second major studio project, drawing on our personal histories as solo Artists and as an apt follow on from Qua, these pieces drew us together as both colleagues and as friends. Perhaps more structural in a classical sense than Qua it has much of the same aesthetic, one of hectic revelation, this time beneath a glorious calm; like an open sky suffused with light.

[B2] - Qua, a definition by example, a principle of understanding, our first major work together. We both have backgrounds steeped in Electronic, Electroacoustic, and Experimental music in the Avant-garde and Contemporary Classical; this was then a show piece to discover ourselves as a serious studio collaboration. It sets the tone of ingenuity and difficulty of much of our music. Qua a landmark of fluidity and elegance standing at the outset of an interesting period in both our careers. We like to say it cycles with manifold intersecting lines of detail in fractalinial unfolding, as if approaching. It rewards close listening. Cover Art by Jim Tetlow.

[B1] Live at Bambu - I came down to Leicester’s Bambu club to see Endgame play - the Band of the legendary freeman Brothers of Ultima Thule records - the Label and the shop [which I had be visiting for years]. Maria Finch - percussionist on many of my own albums drove me down and told me go and meet the other guy in the band - a tall, thin, longhaired guy much younger than the Freeman Brothers. As I we could have been twins and the Next week, same place - I was on stage with them - the album is my Master of our performance.
